Surviving a rightsizing (in a private company) in Nigeria

Rightsizing is a corporation reorganizing or restructuring their business by cost-cutting, reduction of workforce or reorganizing upper level management.
Sincerely speaking i believe rightsizing is a euphemism for downsizing to make it more pleasant. Dwindling price of oil, competition and other external factors will make a company’s management consider cutting operational cost via laying workforce. Read on to see how to survive a massive layoff at a private company in Nigeria.

Know your Job:
There is no substitute for this. The first selection sieve during downsizing is performance and knowledge of your job description. Prov 22:29 says; “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men. CEO is king, HR is an obscure man.lol

Give more than required:
Yes, you have a clear cut job description, but most employment letters carry a clause that says, “And other duties as assigned by management”. Therein lays your chance to give more than expected. That extra-mile speaks for you during downsizing.

Have a healthy relationship with your team lead:
In a very large organization, management might not know you individually, hence will only see you through the eyes of your team lead or supervisor. In the event of a downsizing your team lead or supervisor becomes your advocate. This doesn’t imply eye service, “arse licking” or zombistic attitude. You’re allowed to have “issues” with your immediate superiors, but it shouldn’t hinder your ability to have a good work relationship.

Volunteer:
Your boss wants someone to run a quick errand. Volunteer! Volunteer as long as it doesn’t affect your main task. It’s not eye service, its RELEVANCE. RELEVANCE that will earn you a salary ADVANCE, not SEVERANCE.

Proffer ways to reduce cost:
Cost cutting is the new way to meet revenue targets. From changing to energy efficient light bulbs to cloud computing, companies are always on the lookout for ways to reduce operational cost. So, blessed is that employee that identifies ways “wastage” and leakages can be plugged.
Practice these and you won’t be swept away be the tsunami of corporate downsizing. Have a blessed day!!!

Your Friend,
