How Valuable Are You To A Recruiter?

The value of an item is determined by how much money (or resource) it takes to acquire such an item. That is why a 24 karat gold necklace is more valuable than a gold plated necklace. Ironically in HR and recruitment, the value of a potential employee isn’t determined by high cost, but low cost. Let me explain.

Gamification And Social HR: Twitter User Gets Internship With Oando PLC

I first heard about the application of Gamification to HR at the Human Capital Summit Africa event i attended earlier this year.  Gamification in HR is the use of game-thinking and game mechanics in recruitment, training and development, and motivation, while Social HR is the use of social media platforms for HR functions. These two concepts are popular among companies targeting millennials.

This morning i stumbled on a news report on how a young Nigerian got an Internship with Oando through Gamification and Social HR.

Olayinka Fajimite with the handle @lordphaj3804 tweeted at Oando (Oando_PLC) asking how many retweet could secure him employment with the Pan- African multinational energy corporation. Oando replied saying; "Unfortunately, we don't do RTs for employment, but we'll do 2,000 RTs for 1 month internship".

Olayinka Fajimiteg got to work, generated impressive publicity and earned over 2,000 retweets in just 4 hours. Oando PLC acknowledged his efforts and tweeted; "Congratulations @lordphaj3804! You just got yourself a one month internship with us. Please DM your email address".

Tweeting further Oando PLC said; "We admire your audacious spirit and tenacity, especially how you humbly rallied everyone to help reach your target. To success, you must have the audacity to start, and tenacity to complete any task or achieve and goal before you. #BeAudacious".

With this event, Gamification and Social HR has gained some popularity and i hope more recruiters adopt it, because lots of talents are lost through “unhuman” selection criteria like aptitude tests, age, class of degree and years of experience.

It is time to put “Human” back in Human Resources.

Fiction: Cook, Pray, Love

Hello!

It is not every time find job, find job. Sometimes, one needs to sit down, dig deep, and get imaginative. It is good for your brain and career.

So, in reaction to the recent controversy surrounding a clergy’s opinion about marriage, culinary skills and praying abilities, I wrote this little fiction last night before bed time. Tell me what you think.

Port-Harcourt Ph.D Student Needs a Job

Last year, I told my mentor about my plans to commence an M.Sc program. She asked; "Why"? I couldn't answer the question, hence I shelved the plan.

Above is a picture of a 26 year old lady in Port-Harcourt. She has a B.Sc (Ed) (Counseling and Psychology), an M.Ed (Psychology) and currently studying for a Ph.D (Psychology), yet desperate times has her carrying a placard to call attention to her unemployed state.

Isn't it ironic, that we spend MONEY to get education so we can get a job and get MONEY? Unless she's on scholarship, a Ph.D student shouldn't be carrying a placard seeking employment. This is why you shouldn't just get education for the sake of it. If an M.Sc or Ph.D won't add value to your life and community, don't get it!

My thoughts: Post graduate education is great, but how relevant is it to your career? Why get an M.Sc only to carry a placard or struggle for entry level jobs with fresh graduates? Get profitable knowledge instead. Get a skill, training or program that equips and positions you to solve real problems and make money.

Recruitment Scam: Fake Federal Government Worker Busted

According to a report by punch newspapers, no fewer than 21 job seekers have fallen victims to a fake official of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abayomi Owoyale, after giving him money to secure teaching jobs.

Abayomi Owoyale, was said to have sold each of the letters, purportedly signed by the permanent secretary of the ministry, for N60,000. While some paid in cash, others reportedly paid into a Zenith Bank account number 2170004060, bearing Fajemisin Olakunle Owoyale. Owoyale is currently in detention at the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, Lagos State.

N60,000 is enough to start a business or enroll for an ICT course.
N60,000 is someone's 3 months salary. Ironically, the Elites are getting their children free jobs at the CBN, while children of minimum wage earns are falling victim to fraudsters. Nawa!

These are desperate times and fraudsters are churning up new schemes targeted at desperate job seekers. Do not fall victim to recruitment scams. Recruiters want your skills, not your money!

Silly and bizarre reasons people have been denied employment

Every job has some non-negotiable requirements candidates must fulfil to be considered for employment. Regardless of how qualified you are; these requirements are almost immutable. For example, you can’t work in fast food business and keep your beard. You can’t join the Nigerian police force if you are a male below 1.67m (5.6 Ft); neither can you join the Nigerian Army if you are flat footed.

The “fear of rejection” is a really strong phobia. Scientists, authors, inventors and almost everyone who has impacted the human race has felt it at least once. So it is quite normal for you as a job-seeker to fear the possibility of your application being rejected or not scaling through the interview phase of a recruitment exercise.

Olumo Rock: Fun, Adventure And A Dream Come True

I visited Abeokuta (which means “Under the rock”) for the first time while in primary six, when my class went to write the Ogun State Government Schools Examination. While planning the trip, our headmaster - Mr. Alli - promised to take us on an excursion to Olumo Rock…if we had enough time after the exams. Sadly, we finished exams late and our dream of visiting Olumo Rock was not to be…well until yesterday.
