From Private Lesson Tutor to Company Manager: An Inspiring Career Story

Reading inspiring stories is my favourite part-time. What better way to relax than to read the adventure and success stories of job-seekers, social entrepreneurs and start-ups.

The latest inspiring story I read is from a job seeker who went from a N5000 monthly salary to N400, 000. From been a private lesson tutor, to a company manager. It is a story that best illustrates the wisdom of “THINK BIG, START SMALL, ACT NOW”.

Interview Candidate Asks Interviewer for "Transport Money"

Hello! Happy new week to you!

In an interview, the recruiter usually ends the interview by asking if you have any question. This gives the candidate an opportunity to get clarification on grey areas of the remuneration, job description and company policy/process.

I recently read online how a candidate used this 'golden opportunity' in an amusing and almost silly way.

Well, i followed up on the story online and here are some of the comments from applicants who gave out these sensitive information while filling out the application form on Fidelity Banks career portal.

Can You Believe A Job Applicant Told His Interviewer To F**k Off?

It might sound like a Nollywood script, but sadly it is not.

Apparently, a man scheduled for a job interview drove into a parking space another man was patiently waiting for. That’s not all. He also told the man to F**k Off.

Well, the man whose parking space was “stolen” turned out to be a recruiting manager and guess who the interviewee was…The guy who insulted him! Woah!

The interviewer’s name is Sean Sparling and he tweeted it.

Job Search In Nigeria Is Not A Sprint…It’s A Marathon!

Hello Job Seekers,

have you noticed that recruitment drives in Nigeria have become somewhat longer than usual? Well, Lengthy recruitment exercise is one of the trends peculiar to the Nigerian job market.

By Lengthy recruitment exercise, i mean a recruitment exercise that takes forever.  An example cited in the book - The Job Seekers’ Creed™- is the 2010 Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) recruitment drive. The recruitment exercise started in December 2010 and the new recruits were inducted in August 2012; after 1 year and 8 months.

High Unemployment: Job Seekers March to Alausa In Protest (Photos)

About a 100 men and women with placards all dressed corporately as if they were going for a job interview were seen at Alausa Ikeja last Thursday.

Investigations revealed that they were unemployed graduates marching peacefully to the Lagos State Government’s office in Alausa, Ikeja where they had gone to express their displeasure and raise awareness about the unemployment situation in the state to the State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

Recruitment via post mail: Employers way of attracting only serious candidates

Hello People, yesterday I sent a friend a link to a graduate administrative officer job opening. She thanked me for the information and minutes later replied; "Post mail? Who does that"? I persuaded her to go ahead and send her cover letter and CV, but she said the post office is too far.

Discrimination or lack of trust in our educational system?

Hello great people, I saw this on twitter and didn't believe it until I did a Google search about it.
Apparently, a microfinance bank in Lagos only want graduates from;
-Babcock University
-Covenant University
-Lead City University

WHAT I  LEARNT FROM MY TWO MONTHS OF JOB HUNTING

The ultimate goal of every student is to graduate and earn a decent living. This could be through entrepreneurial exercise or working for an employer. I chose to tread the path of the latter, which many graduates will also choose (white collar job).
The first thing that will be sung to you once you start your service year is ‘there is no job in the country’. You will be amazed that people still get jobs on daily basis. The question you will be asking yourself will be ‘Are they not humans like myself?’ The most interesting part is that you maybe be better off academically when compared to them. Another interesting thing you will notice is that most of these people that got employment did not get it within the confine of their field of study.
What then is the secret for getting this job?

Recruitment Fraud In Nigeria: Protect Yourself!

In Nigeria, every problem provides opportunities not just for solution providers, but fraudsters too. Housing/real estate, international travel, imports, and tertiary institution admissions problems create opportunities for fraudulent “agents”, and sadly unemployment is not excluded. Many desperate and gullible job-seekers have been duped via job placement promises and bogus recruitment drives.

Chapter 12 of My Book- The Job Seekers’ Creed- focused on recruitment fraud. Here is an excerpt from the book.

Surviving a rightsizing (in a private company) in Nigeria

Rightsizing is a corporation reorganizing or restructuring their business by cost-cutting, reduction of workforce or reorganizing upper level management.
Sincerely speaking i believe rightsizing is a euphemism for downsizing to make it more pleasant. Dwindling price of oil, competition and other external factors will make a company’s management consider cutting operational cost via laying workforce. Read on to see how to survive a massive layoff at a private company in Nigeria.
